They found the cat pictures on the flash drive that was sent to Pricewaterhousecoopers. It was somewhere on the site. Okay, you're an FBI investigator. You find a picture of cats on the flash drive. Whose door do you knock on? This is exactly why I never do extortion. It is way too much trouble. Plus, you can never trust your pets. Most likely doesn't work. From what I understand, flash memory has a limited lifespan so the physical locations of data change depending on the number of times it's written to. Apparently this is why you shouldn't use Truecrypt hidden partitions on an SSD, the wear balancing gives the game away. All he really needed was to back it up. If you can move the funds to a new wallet before they do they are still yours. If you're "barely scratching out a living for my young family" with kBTC, you're doing it wrong.
As far as I recall from his posts on the forum last year, KnightMB never really took any steps to hide his identity. He was also very open about the fact that he happened to get his Bitcoins in a very lucky way.
Basically, the people he bought them from didn't really recognize their value. His original plan seemed to be to help Bitcoin grow by spending his stash on building a mining datacenter.
It wasn't a particularly good business idea. But he seemed like just an average IT guy who was more interested in helping the community than making money. And I got the impression that the guilt he felt in the way he stumbled upon his Bitcoins probably played into this as well. Unfortunately, in the Bitcoin world, having a lot of Bitcoins and being open about your identity tends to attract unwanted attention.
And an average, naive IT guy is a perfect target. It seems like he got some. So, at the moment, I'm filing this away as another likely example of high-profile Bitcoiners being targeted. I've actually been wondering for a while now how many early adopters are still left out there. I just had a cunning idea: This person must have learned about his identity and wealth and picked through his garbage or stole the named USD stick from him to commit the Romney extortion with it, knowing that it could be traced back to him. He then waited for the Feds to take him into custody and now tries to extort the BTCs for some exonerating evidence.
What are your oppinions on it detectives? That sounds a hell of a lot more plausible than him being too cheapskate to buy a brand new flash drive. Were those pics the content of the encrypted file?
If so, how did they crack it? It seems unlikely that he or anybody else would leave any unencrypted files on the drive that could be traced back. KnightMB's last post on forum explains what happened to money he had: Thats BS, you can easily verify the wikileaks donation address never received more then or so BTC. They may have provided him with a personal donation address, but there is no evidence of that yet. But you have to consider that wikileaks also provides an irc-service where you can get a unique deposit address, so your donation does not show in public.
