I don't disagree litecoin what evga wrote but I'm interested in using my own resources to help fund litecoin folding home hardware by potentially mining alt coins. As expected the boost result from the GTX we are seeing are in the range 1. My big worry is the two other machines in my office at home, I hope those don't power up before Power have a chance to go home and slap some powered risers in. The grand scheme it seems pretty freaking retarded, but if you can do it on a small scale with your computer and get some free stuff out of it, might not be boost bad deal. But somehow you missed that. What kind of computer case would you need to house all evga cards?

I'm running 2 cards in the x16 slot without power on a rig still awaiting powered risers So I'm at risk, as well. It's my hope that someone will benefit from my experience and prevent burning their house down, or at least save them a motherboard. One of them has been offline all day, but it's always been sorta flaky, though my luck this week would dictate it's fried too. Can you tell me if you were running other cooling fans off the mobo?
Also does your mobo have a 4-pin CPU power or ? I've taken to removing all non-critical fans from the mobo and moving them to PSU's. Yeah, I had 3 fans running off the motherboard, and was CPU mining across 3 of the 4 cores. I swapped some machines around, that board is still working just fine, happily crunching away with 4 58xx in it, now on powered risers! PSU is the ultimate factor. Arguably more than the mobo.
The PSU runs all your connections, and regulates your power. Always make sure your PSU is a single-rail 12v. That ensures that you'll have enough power throughout every component. Is it possible to mix non powered and powered risers safely? For example, have 3 non powered and 2 powered risers? After some posting cause surprisingly no one cares to mention HOW they connected their powered risers or maybe its common knowledge?
I had no idea of the appropriate way. What finally worked for me is this: I am very excited to finally scale up. As I was only testing with 1 PSU and at idle it pulls around 10watts I do not think this is enough to load it.
If you do not load it, the PSU does not know to turn on. Again, I am not sure if you hook up 4 GPUs if this would still be necessary! From my research and I think it has been stated in this thread is: It is only necessary to use powered risers to protect the MB, if you're using 6 GPUs, 3 - x1 and 3 - x16 that's a theoretical and possible watts that has to be drawn from the PCB of the MB.
If you search on google or bitcointalk you can find some pictures of what this does after prolonged periods of time. Not safe at all! The risk may be worthwhile to you! I am about to start rockin some multi psu rigs myself. What you did was comingle separate 12v rails. An old school transformer and diode PSU might not have cared but these newer digital switching ones are probably more sensitive to getting a voltage input from the other psu on their voltage output.
You probably also altered the path to ground and each psu may have seen the other as a short path to ground and dumped current into each other frying themselves. Thanks for the explanation!
I do not know why there's really not much info on this sort of thing. I suppose its "common sense"? Did not know a ATX could only pull up to W. Have a friend that could not get more than three cards to work in a system. Told him to start with this to get an idea of what the system is using in terms of power.
A good clamp multi-meter will measure DC, the cheap ones will only measure AC. Measure with a xPCI 16 card installed.

And taking off extra fans off the motherboard might be smart. Obviously with a multi-layer board it's hard to see exactly what's going on, but with all this combined, it would appear that this on-board connector is trying to achieve the same thing as the EVGA Power Boost.
Sure, the power runs through the board, but it's not all trying to come from the 12V pin on the main mobo power connector. If you do own risers but are looking for powered ones, there are a few tutorials out there to help you mod your existing risers. I prefer to mod mine so I can put thicker wirer and such. Plus its my own work so I know I did it right and wont short out my card.
