Not sure what I'm doing here but at least it works.. I thought primecoin was based on a fork of the bitcoin client. I made the assumption it used the built in 'GetWork' function or its modern incarnations to pool mine. That sequence is for Cunningham Chains of the First Kind.

Once the sieve is run most numbers will be eliminated, simply by the nature of a sieve. One can then look at R-1, 2R-1, 4R-1, If one is interested in chains of length 8 or longer and finds that R-1 and R-1 are both composite as proven by the sieve then there is no reason to test 2R-1, 4R-1, If, however, you were looking for chains of length 7 or 6 then you would check the chain.

This could mean a single primality check on the first number that shows it to be comosite, or you could have to do several if you have a gap of 7 and are looking for chains of 6 you could check the first but even if it fails you have to check the 2nd because you still have a gap of 6 remaining. If you check the 2nd first, though, then you can eliminate the entire gap with a single Fermat Primality Test, which is the bulk of the computation in the proof of work.

That is where the exploit is, not in whether or not to test the 7th and 8th numbers once a share is found. The server has to check those numbers anyway, so it is wholly inefficient for the miner to waste their time on it. If a miner is looking for network difficulty say, 8 shares then they will not waste their time on doing any primality tests on numbers that fall in gaps of 7 or fewer number that pass the sieve.

If, however, they are self-interested as you can expect a miner to be then they will check everything in a gap of share difficulty say, 6 , even if they have already shown that a network difficulty share will not result. This obviously benefits the miners--they get more chances at finding a share per sieve--and obviously harms the pool--the miner is wasting time not trying to find a network difficulty block. Those two circumstances are sufficient to demonstrate that the attack exists.

The only remaining question to answer is how bad is the exploit? For that, I would turn to the oft-cited primes per second number that has grown popular in recent time. That number reports the number of origins that are found each second that have at least a difficulty of 1 in either Cunningham chain type or a bi-twin chain, but that is implied by the existence of a Cunningham chain, given that Primecoin has given a definition for a bi-twin chain of odd length.

Recently, when difficulty tripped over to 8 the primes per second dropped pretty universally. That is exactly because of the exploit I am describing. Miners were suddenly not checking chains of length 7 anymore, since such chains were not going to solve a block. As such, they checked fewer chains per sieve and found fewer primes per second. If you offer work shares at a difficulty of 6 and the network difficulty is 8 then I would expect to be able to get about 2. This exploit is very real and very dangerous to pool owners.

If you don't believe me, be warned that I am likely to take your source code, find the 1 or 2 lines to change, and demonstrate the power of this kind of attack more for academic reasons than for personal gain. I would also release my changes, to at least keep the playing field somewhat level. At the end of the day, I am not convinced that you or anyone else has solved the problem of creating a pool that is not weak to this attack.

Perhaps you can offer a small reward for difficulty 6 blocks, a larger reward for difficulty 7 blocks, and a substantially larger reward for difficulty 8 blocks. I suspect that tuning those rewards and perhaps continuing the sequence could make the attack I described useless, but it is at the cost of higher variance. It is also probable that if you tune that approach incorrectly then it will actually make the opposite attack viable i.

It works with a difficulty difference of 2, maybe 3, but at some point the ratio of useless shares would be too large and the wasted performance too much.

Today I spent some time thinking about how to tackle this problem and I came up with an idea that might work although it has some disadvantages:. I will start by explaining that this approach forces all miners to use the same implementation of sieving. It allows them to tweak and increase performance of the sieve, but not using a completely different algorithm.

My idea is that for each share submitted to the server, we also send the sieve size, the fixedMultiplier and the chosen sieve candidate used for finding this chain. If not, the miner cheats on us and should be punished in whatever way makes sense. If yes, everything is alright.

Besides forcing all miners to use the same sieving algorithm, it comes with a high demand on server CPU load. What do you think? Is there anything I am overlooking again?
