Ethereum uses the technology that powers bitcoin to Also power cloud-based computer programs. Part of their idea is to use virtual currency as payment for these programs, as well as for a few other things on the backend. They call their virtual currency ether instead of bitcoin. It's a very good idea and has lots of room to grow. On the other hand, bitcoin and ethereum run on the same technology by design, which has the following effect: A company called Rootstock is preparing a way to integrate ethereum's programming framework into bitcoin using bitcoin as the currency instead of ether, and supposedly it will be backward-compatible, meaning programmers won't need to rewrite their code to put it on Rootstock and start using bitcoin as the payment token.
They can just port it as-is. If Rootstock delivers on their promises, ethereum might be kind of obsolete. Or Rootstock might not be able to get their software finished in time, and ethereum could leave them in the dust.
Or both could thrive a la Apple vs. Even in the worst case scenario for ethereum, there's still money to be made there in the short term. Just hope a bubble isnt coming.. Bitcoin will be a store of value with some very large investment in the future.
Ethereum is a meaningless token separate to the company which I'm sure have some great use cases.. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. Bitcoin comments other discussions 1. Log in or sign up in seconds.

Keep them in your Ledger Nano S which now supports bitcoin, ethereum, ethereum classic, zcash, litecoin, dash, dodge etc. After getting the BTC, would shapeshift. Or does Poloniex provide better rates? BitBargain is probably the easiest to get set up with, and GBP purchases are pretty instant. It's not the cheapest though.
They do have LTC listed but I wouldn't recommend buying that from there You're better off setting up an account on Poloinex and exchanging your BTC for whatever other cryptocurrencies you want. Alternatively, Kraken is pretty decent if you're planning to buy a larger amount. So, what's the difference between Poloinex and Kraken, and which one would you recommend? I've set up an account with Kraken - which looks pretty straightforward. Now another question I have which is more generic is the following: I wan't to re-emphasise GibletHead's point about keeping your own private keys.
It might seem that an exchange is unlikely to take your coins, but it has happened repeatedly. Seriously, unless you are actively trading, an exchange should not have your money or coins. It does depend on your risk profile.
I usually keep 5 Bitcoins on a couple of exchanges for easy trading I would not keep any coins on an exchange that does margin trading or lending as I would fear that they are too likely to be regulated out of existence.
Poloinex is quicker to set up and requires less verification to trade cryptocurrencies, and they have lots of currencies available. If you're buying quick via BitBargian then I'd recommend them to exchange your cryptocoins.
If you're in Kraken for deposits, there's no reason not to trade for your altcoins in there as well. It's not recommended to leave your coins in an exchange for long periods.
If the exchange goes titsup or runs away with the money then they have your coins and there's nothing you can do about it. The important thing when keeping coins is that you have the private key, not someone else. The private key is the equivalent of the actual banknotes, in your hand. Which is why there's nothing you can do if an exchange or similar runs away with your money. The best kind of wallet to use is one like Electrum that runs as a thin client.
Your private key is also derived from a word 'seed' so it's easier to write down and keep safe. Electrum connects to another computer running the blockchain so you don't have to run a full client and download the many-gigabytes of blockchain data yourself, but it still keeps the private key on your computer so you're the only one who has it unlike most places online to store your coins.
I'm not sure what there is for ETH, as I run a full node for that. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. Log in or sign up in seconds. Submit a new link. Submit a new text post.
