This worked really well for me last patch. This time, I don't know whether it was bad luck, a patch change, or maybe Alpha quadrant is just like this - but the sand mining technique got me very little on my first desert planet. Huge sand pockets got me maybe a handful of ores. Desert planets are the way to go. Just mine the fine sand it's the sand that collapses when you mine it , and you'll get a metric buttload of ore. Find fine sand on a desert planet. The ore will pop out and funnel right to you as the sand collapses.
Thanks, I'll have to give that a try. I can't believe I haven't ran into any sand yet. I'm the same as you, I just run along the planet surface hoovering up any ores I want. I'll sometimes go down into an open cave, but I rarely actually dig down. So far what you're doing is pretty much the most efficient but hopefully that'll change with ore rebalancing, but for deep mining I usually grab the grappling hook gun as it makes getting around a lot easier and fun, throw in the lantern on a stick for some easy light and underground exploration can be just as fun as aboveground And possible more rewarding once more features are added.
I mine straight down in starbound all the time, what's the worry when you can see lava coming, and with a lantern on a stick you can see when you're about to fall into a cavern? As you dig, you will make a ledge every 4 blocks making an easy staircase and no need to move your mouse or anything. I dig a three-block-wide tunnel straight down. It seems inefficient, but that flesh biome's ore concentration more than makes up for it. What is important about the flesh biome? My starting planet has it and I didn't think anything of it. The flesh biome has very soft material to dig through and it has a significantly higher ore concentration. I do the same thing, surface mining. I hear mining asteroid fields are really good but I need a way to withstand the temperatures.
